COX Bill Cox is a lecturer in mathematics at Aston University and, until recently, was Senior Tutor in Mathematics. His research interests include geometrical methods in quantum, field theories and the theory of quantum transport phenomena. Recently he has become interested in academic staff development, with particular interest in teaching and learning. His book “Practical Pointers for University Teachers”, which deals with both old and new problems in university teaching, has just been published by Kogan Page. In the present article, Dr. Cox comments that, like his colleagues he had bemoaned for years the deterioration in mathematics background in students; and so he decided to investigate the problem systematically. He hopes that, if nothing else, the article will provoke lively debate Address for correspondence: Department of Computer Science and Applied Mathematics, Aston University, Aston Triangle, Birmingham B4 7ET, UK.
