ResumoThe principal reasons for the deviation of simple ionic partition equilibria in waterswollen charged membranes from the behaviour predicted by the simple Donnan equilibrium equipotential volume (EV) treatment are considered. The status and extent of experimental applicability of two relatively simple non-EV models, namely the Glueckauf and equipotential surface (ES) models are considered. It is shown that an important physical insight into the former, rather abstract and largely empirical, approach can be obtained by suitable elaboration of the latter, rather highly idealized, but physically concrete model.
