ResumoA brief historic description is given of solar distillation in Chile and the famous plant built by Carlos Wilson in 1872 and its reconstruction. “Natural distillation” caused by the coastal fog (“camanchaca”) and its uses are discussed. The two types of direct distillation solar equipment: (1) stills with an evaporation wick and (2) basin-type stills, as well as indirect solar distillation, are considered and conclusions are drawn regarding their use in desert conditions.
