ResumoAfter the great success of the First Consensus Conference in 2006 (Hämmerle & van Steenbeeghe 2006), the EAO board decided to organize a second conference in 2009. Marc Quirynen and Christoph Hämmerle were given the task to assemble a scientific committee, to develop the program and to organize the conference. The board supervised these activities throughout the entire preparation and execution process of the conference. For the selection of topics and participants the following members joined the scientific committee: John Hobkirk, Franck Renouard, Daniel Buser, Thomas Flemmig, Mariano Sanz, Georg Watzek, Friedrich Neukam, Marc Quirynen, and Christoph Hämmerle. A total of 55 persons from 17 countries participated in this international consensus conference. With the aim of clarifying issues pertinent to contemporary implant dentistry the scientific committee chose these topics of clinical and scientific importance for the consensus conference: Ceramics in implant dentistry Biomechanics/risk management Tissue augmentation/esthetics Implant surfaces and designs Under each topic three to four important questions were formulated. Subsequently, experts in these fields were contacted and asked to collect the scientific and clinical evidence and to write a review manuscript. Depending on the amount and quality of the literature available the task was either to write a systematic review according to accepted procedures or to prepare a manuscript written according to the format of a narrative review. The latter was done in situations where there was a paucity of scientific data on the given topic. Hence, in preparation of the conference 15 rapporteurs wrote manuscripts, which were then distributed to the conference participants. The work was performed within four groups under the conference topics. For maximum support of the discussions online access was provided to pertinent literature databases to allow download of required articles. At the beginning of the group work everybody was asked to reveal possible conflicts of interest with respect to the topics to be discussed and the content of the consensus conference. Subsequently, the individual rapporteurs gave a short presentation on how they approached writing the review, how they decided on the inclusion and exclusion criteria, how the literature search was conducted, how the date were extracted, and what the major findings were. Thereafter, the reviews were thoroughly discussed and evaluated by the group and a consensus report was formulated including summaries of the manuscripts and conclusions regarding patient treatment and future research. This report was then further discussed and scrutinized during the general assembly until a general consensus among all participants of the consensus meeting was reached. The results of this conference are now available in the form of this special issue of Clinical Oral Implants Research. Thanks to its healthy financial status the EAO was able to fully fund this consensus conference from its own resources. No outside funding was, therefore, accepted for this meeting. The organizers gratefully thank all the participants of the Second EAO Consensus Conference 2009 for their valuable support of the meeting. Special thanks is extended to the rapporteurs for providing the reviews, to the group chairpersons and secretaries for their guidance during the conference and for formulating the consensus reports, and to the board of the EAO for the mandate to organize the conference. Finally, particular appreciation is given to Niklaus P. Lang, editor-in-chief of Clinical Oral Implants Research, and to Wiley-Blackwell for supporting this consensus conference by publishing the results in this high-ranked journal.
