Defining a musical genre remains difficult even when its performers and creators are readily identified with a particular culture, tradition, or geographic region. Among array of classifications under heading are many complicating variables that compound definitional problems.' At present, rockabilly is typically defined as the hybrid of blues and country that became rock & roll,2 or the earliest style of white rock-and-roll, which blended blues with country music; term is a combination of 'rock' and 'hillbilly.'3 In hindsight, it becomes clear that rockabilly's transitional role in history of American popular music was inevitable and owed much to both musical and social climate of mid-1950s.
