ResumoThis essay identifies the source of the power behind Rzewski's The People United will Never be Defeated (TPU) by providing a mythological reading of the piece. By relying on what Rzewski says about meaningful rituals and music as a form of spiritual expression, the author compares TPU to a shamanic ritual. The essay highlights how the main theme of the piece goes through a series of symbolic deaths and rebirths, and emerges stronger each time. It explores Rzewski's spiritual growth from his early days in Musica Elettronica Viva (MEV), the antecedents of the shamanic process in his music, the concept of unity from a mythological standpoint, and how Rzewski goes beyond the political.
