Resumo

Muriel's Wedding (1995), an Australian film directed by P. J. Hogan and ostensibly about a small-town girl's search for self-esteem through marriage, may be appropriated for an oppositional, reading that runs counter to the preferred or dominant reading provided for by heterocentrist society. Instead of a lesbian subtext, I identify a lesbian that undermines the heterocentrist text and suggests desire and love between Muriel and Rhonda. Muriel's Wedding is a scathing critique of romance, weddings, and heteropatriarchy, while the countertext allows for a appropriation and rereading.
