ResumoOn behalf of the Registry Executive Committee, I am pleased to present the 2012 Annual Reports of the Scientific Registry (the Registry) of the International Society for Heart and Lung Transplantation (ISHLT). The Registry has now collected, analyzed, and reported data regarding more than 150,000 heart, heart-lung, and lung transplants. We are delighted to report a new relationship with the Registro Español de Trasplante Cardíaco, which will allow us, for the first time, to add data to the Registry regarding more than 4,000 heart transplants performed in Spain between May 1984 and March 2012. As in past years, all of the data, figures, and tables included in the Registry reports are also available on the ISHLT Web site (www.ishlt.org/registries) in MS PowerPoint format (Microsoft Corp., Redmond, WA). The Web site also contains many additional data slides that are not included in the published reports. In addition, those wishing to view the published reports online may do so at www.cardiosource.com. In addition to the information available in the published Registry reports and slide sets, continent-specific and center-specific data reports can be obtained from the secure section of the ISHLT Web site (www.ishlt.org). Continent-specific reports are available to everyone and allow comparison of continent-specific transplant data with that of all transplants submitted to the Registry. Center-specific reports allow comparison of an individual's center with that of all transplants submitted to the Registry. These reports are available to all actively participating centers, including those submitting data via organ exchange organizations. Because we only want staff members affiliated with each center to access center-specific reports from their own center, center-specific reports require a user name and password, which can be obtained from Kathryn Philibin ([email protected]). ISHLT Young Investigator Awards were presented to two individuals in 2012: Dr Erin Lowery (Loyola University Medical Center) for her project, "Identifying Risk Factors for the Development of PTLD in Patients with Cystic Fibrosis following Lung Transplantation," and Dr Omar Wever-Pinzon (University of Utah) for his project, "Impact of Recipient Age on Differential Causes of Heart Transplant Mortality—is it Time to Personalize Post-transplant Management?" We are also pleased to announce that two prior Young Investigator award recipients were able to present results from their projects at the 2012 Scientific Sessions in Prague, Czech Republic: Dr Jennifer Conway ("Risk Factors for and Risk of Graft Loss after Pediatric Heart Retransplantation: Analysis of the ISHLT Registry") and Dr Jose Nativi ("Post-transplant Survival of Patients in Need of Biventricular and Right-Ventricular Mechanical Bridge to Heart Transplantation: A Comparative Analysis of the ISHLT Transplant Registry"). An additional abstract using ISHLT Registry data, "Late Mortality after Heart Transplantation in Adults with Congenital Heart Disease" (L. J. Burchill, et. al.) was also presented. In 2012, Dr Anne Dipchand (University of Toronto) joined the Registry Executive Committee and will serve as a coauthor of this year's pediatric heart transplant manuscript. Next year, she will assume the position of Associate Medical Director for Pediatric Heart Transplantation from Dr Richard Kirk, who has served extremely ably in that capacity since 2008. This will be my final year as Registry Medical Director, a position in which I have served for more than a decade. I am honored that the ISHLT has given me the opportunity to lead a team of talented statisticians, analysts, physicians, and surgeons during my tenure, during which we have seen the addition of more than 80,000 new heart and lung transplant records to the Registry. Now, I will join the ranks of former Registry directors—including Dr Michael Kaye, who served from 1983 to 1993, and Dr. Jeffrey Hosenpud, who served from 1994 to 2001. With an eye to the future, the ISHLT Board has wisely appointed Dr Josef Stehlik (University of Utah) as the fourth Registry Medical Director. Dr Stehlik's talent, energy, and commitment will ensure that the Registry remains the world's most comprehensive record of heart and lung transplant activity, practices, and outcomes; and a resource for ongoing research regarding these continually evolving areas of practice. We again express gratitude to the many heart and lung transplant surgeons and physicians, clinical coordinators, data coordinators, organ exchange organizations, and other reporting agencies throughout the world, whose timely and accurate submission of data has enabled the Registry to thrive during the past 29 years. We also appreciate the ongoing commitment by the Society and its members to the continued vitality and growth of this valuable resource. We also wish to acknowledge the outstanding contributions of the following individuals at TII Informatics Group, without whose assistance the Registry and its Annual Reports would not be possible: Frank Gilg, Susan Groff, Matthew Harrison, Kathryn Philibin, Robert Todd, and Jaime Williamson.
