ResumoOptical absorption coefficient of expanded fluid Hg has been measured in the density range up to 7.5 g/cm3. The density variation of the optical gap below 7.5 g/cm3 suggests that it closes near 10 g/cm3, which nearly coincides with the metal-nonmetal transition density estimated from electrical transport data. At low densities d around 1 g/cm3 the absorption coefficient in the tail part of the absorption band shows a dependence on d4, which may suggest formation of Hg4 clusters in the compressed vapor.
