ResumoThis article examines differences between male and female general practitioners in private practice in New York City with regard to their attitudes and orientations toward treating HIV-infected patients. The survey asked about willingness to treat such patients and perceptions that might influence that willingness, particularly those related to safety and self-efficacy and risk of occupationally acquiring HIV. Possible explanations for gender-related differences are considered. Implications of these findings for the development of HIV-related continuing education programs are discussed.
