ResumoScholarship for both teaching and research depends on the same central values of creativity and commitment. The basic question is whether scholarship related to teaching can be fostered in afashion similar to research. Response to this question requires exploring several aspects of the culture and social structure of teaching. Undergraduate teaching has a limited technical culture, and most teachers work in a social context of limited collegiality. Despite these limitations, six concrete proposals are made for cultivating a scholarly approach to teaching: (1) identify key topics of a technical culture of teaching, (2) develop a problemfinding agenda, (3) build collegial networks, (4) enhance the visibility of text writing and criticism, (5) broaden methodology of teaching evaluation, (6) create teacher-scholar roles that allow opportunities for critical appraisal. These six proposals require complimentary support from the local campus and professional association.
