ResumoAbstract Polycrystalline yttrium–aluminum garnet (YAG) was processed via mechanical alloying (MA). The powder mixture comprising equal proportions of elemental aluminum and yttria was mechanically alloyed (MA’d) for 5 h and the MA’d powder mixture was heat treated. While MA resulted in aluminum–yttrium solid solution, the reaction leading to the formation of YAG occurs during the subsequent heat treatment of the powder mixture.
