Resumo

The purpose of this article is to provide a broad outline of two major theories of argumentation having marked present-day thinking. One, Perelman s theory, centres on the universal audience as the paradigm of Reason. Toulmin s theory, on the other hand, starts with the role of logic and develops towards probahilism. Despite their differences, both authors are firmly grounded in the Aristotelian tradition of argumentation as a dialectical process.
