ResumoThe salinity tolerance of fry of two species of grey mullet Chelon labrosus and Mugil cephalus was tested in the laboratory by gradual and abrupt salinity increases. Fish acclimated in aquaria with 20 ppt sea water were used. Both species acclimated gradually over 35–40 days with no signs of stress at salinities lower than 116 ppt for C. labrosus and 126 ppt for M. cephalus. At these salinities all fish died in 1–4 days. Direct transfers from 20 ppt to salinities of 35, 40, 45, 50, 55, 60, 65, 70, 75 and 80 ppt were performed. In both species, mortality occurred at salinities greater than 45 ppt. LC50 (24-h) values calculated with probit method were 53.1±1.98 ppt for C. labrosus and 50.4±2.19 ppt for M. cephalus.
