Resumo

This article addresses the assessment of the patient with psychiatric signs and symptoms, focusing initially on determining if a psychiatric problem is present followed by the full psychiatric assessment. The psychiatric interview in the emergency department (ED) must be both concise and practical. An outline of a structured interview is provided here, with an approach to cognitive testing.
