ResumoThis study presents a previously unattributed tornesello coinage of the Late Byzantine Morea. It was studied by the author principally amongst the excavation finds from Sparta, and only two additional specimens are known to him from Thebes and the island of Euboia respectively. The coinage was issued in the name of emperor Manuel II Palaiologos (1391-1425). It was probably produced in the mid- 1390s, or perhaps in 1408/1415-16. The mint was probably located in Monemvasia, though it might have been in Mystras. The identification of this coinage might also provide the key to two late 14th / early 15th century references to the monetary affairs of Byzantine Morea which have so far remained rather ill understood. The coinage is testimony to the relative longevity of the city of Sparta and the fiscal integration of Byzantine Constantinople and the Péloponnèse, though it must be ultimately judged a failure.
