Abstract The D( 3 He, pn) 3 He, D( 3 He, 2p)T and 3 He( 3 He, 2P) 4 He reactions have been studied at several angles by observing two of the three final particles in coincidence and analysing their energies with a two-parameter pulse-height analyser. The D( 3 He, pn) 3 He reaction was found to proceed through 3 He-n and p-n final state interactions. The D( 3 He, 2p)T proceeds predominantly through excited states of 4 He. No evidence was found for a strong p-p final state interaction. The quantum numbers for the second excited state of 4 He are suggested as 1 − ( T = 2). The 3 He( 3 He, 2p) 4 He reaction proceeds predominantly through the ground state and first excited states of 5 Li. Again, no evidence was found for a strong p-p final state interaction.
