Resumo

Thirty-five patients who were referred for endodontic therapy were used in this study of a meditative state for hypnotic induction. They were told to relax, close their eyes, and repeat silently a simple word (for example, “flower”). As they were repeating the sound, suggestions were given of numbness spreading from the tips of the toes to the facial area. Next, the patients were told to stop repeating the word. Deepening of hypnosis was then obtained by the “descending elevator” method. With most persons, it was possible to redirect the numbness to the specific tooth being treated. With others, it was necessary to obtain “glove” anesthesia and then transferral of anesthesia orally. Depending upon the clinical condition and the degree of hypno-analgesia, supplemental local anesthesia was or was not used. The time interval from eye closure to the completed suggestion of numbness was 7 to 8 minutes. With most patients, treatment was initiated within 10 to 15 minutes from the time of eye closure.
