THE epidemiologic and clinical features of urinary-tract infections among 13,000 schoolchildren residing in Waynesboro and Charlottesville—Albemarle County, Virginia, have been presented in two previous communications.1 , 2 The present report is concerned with the characterization of the bacteria isolated from the 74 cases detected in these studies. Particular emphasis is placed on the serologic types of Escherichia coli isolated on multiple occasions from the same persons before initiation of specific therapy. Subsequent reports will deal with the immediate and long-term results of therapy, with the nature of the organisms isolated on relapse or reinfection and with measurement of antibody to Esch. coli . . .
