The family origins of the lords of Cabreira e Ribeira are still a true enigma for the portuguese historiography and genealogy, in the sense that, till today, they have not yet been able to identify correctly the identity of the Count Osório of Cabreira e Ribeira and of his wife.This fact constitutes a barrier towards the knowledge of all the causes of the social climb of this family group within the ranks of the nobility of the western realms of the peninsula.Therefore, we will try in this article to reveal their personalities, to understand the causes of the penetration of their descendants in Portugal and, at the same time, to analyze the form in which their origins conditioned their evolution and social ascension.
