Resumo

It was analysed in This study the use of antimicrobial agents in Hospital Universitário Regional do Norte do Parana -(HURNP), January to December, 1988. The general rare of the use the antimicrobial agents was of 46.02%, being admitted to the hospital the total of 12193 patients in this period. The prophilatic and therapeutic rate of antimicrobial use was respectively of J5.88% and 31.96%. The average time of general indication was 5.3? days. The clinics where antimicrobial agents were prescribed in 50% of the hospitalized patients were: Urology, Gynecology, Infection Diseases, Vascular Surgery and Children surgery. The penicillin G was the most used antimicrobial agent irate 25.25%) followed by the chloramphenicol (14.77%) and 1st cephalosporins (I0.2ti%f The chloramphenicol was the main antimicrobial agent used for surgical prophylaxis; the rate was of 41.60% for clean surgical procedures. The infection rate for clean surgical procedures was of 4.84% in patients that rook prophylatic antimicrobial agents, and of 6.13% for those that did not take them. It was also analysed the cost of the prophylatic use of antimicrobial agents in surgical procedures. The authors emphasize the necessity of establishing certain mechanisms for cormoling the use of the antimicrobial agents in hospitals.
