Resumo

Abstract Five hundred and eighty four strains of Escherichia coli isolated from 146 diarrhoeic lambs and goat kids in Spain were analysed for the presence of F5 and F41 fimbriae by slide agglutination. Only two strains positive for both F5 and F41 fimbriae from one lamb were isolated. These two strains F5 and F41 positive for slide agglutination were also heat-stable enterotoxin a, F5 and F41 positive by PCR. Thus, our results show that F5 and/or F41 enterotoxigenic E. coli are a very infrequent cause of small ruminant diarrhoea in Spain.
