ResumoWave front solvers, isoparametric elements, shape function subroutines, serendipity, semiloof shells, patch test.. .These highly significant words of the vocabulary of structural analysis in the second half of the twentieth century have become familiar to thousands of professional engineers throughout the world, dealing with computerized or computer-aided engineering, both in design and R & D work.Yet the man whose original ideas and stubborn research are behind these words remains largely unknown to the engineering public at large. This will come as no surprise to those who had the privilege of knowing him and, even more, of engaging in research under his dedicated and careful guidance.Unlike most contemporary finite element celebrities, Bruce Irons was the very example of a quiet, reserved academic; never fully satisfied with the quality of his own work, he almost never considered his contributions as being 'final' on any subject.History however will undoubtedly remember Bruce Irons as one of the leading founders of computer-age structural analysis.
