ResumoThe patterns of protein synthesis during development of the gram-negative bacterium, Caulobacter crescentus, have been studied by sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis, two-dimensional gel electrophoresis, and DNA-cellulose chromatography. The analysis of soluble proteins from cells which had been pulse-labeled with 35S-labeled methionine at different times in the cell cycle showed sequential changes in the proteins synthesized at successive stages of development, and it identified a 20K and a 28K protein which together account for 12% of the protein synthesized in early swarmer cells. Comparison of protein patterns from different stages of development suggested that from 10 to 20% of the genes expressed may be modulated during the life cycle of this organism. The results are consistent with a role of differential gene expression in the temporal control of development in C. crescentus.
