Resumo

A short history of Jahn–Teller (JT) effect is given from the personal perspective of the author, in order to dispel the impression, not infrequently still encountered, that the JT effect has remained an enigma, particularly among experimentalists. The principal questions, which once caused justified confusion as to how the instability predicted by Jahn and Teller would show up experimentally, were resolved, it is shown, more than 30 years ago.
