Resumo* U.t EGULA Rohland de Langbehn has stressed the importance of allegory in the initial stage of the development of sentimental romance suggesting that its use may be derived from allegorical decires or coplas; however, although the role of allegory in individual romances has come under scrutiny, to my knowledge no systematic attempt has been made to analyse its role in the romances as a corpus and this is a first endeavour to rectify this lacuna.'
