Resumoreaction in urine has been to rule out drug excretion. The list in Table I is a useful starting point, but it is by no means exhaustive in scope. Since it is not always clearly predictable whether a compound of known structure will react, an empiric testing of a suspect compound may be required. However, compounds which react with ninhydrin may be converted to nonreactors by cellular mechanisms, prior to excretion, and the converse may also occur. Structural alterations may be produced after collection during extended storage of unrefrigerated samples or on occasion by the conditions of the chromatographic procedure used. It is recommended that the laboratory be, apprised of the patient's status with respect to drug administration and/or unusual dietary regimens to facilitate interpretation of amino acid excretion patterns.
