Previous studies have revealed that the major abnormality of pulmonary function that occurs in sarcoidosis of the lung is reduction of the diffusing capacity. 1-9 Other defects that have been found in this disease include a decrease in lung volume, 1,2,5,6,8,11,12 decrease in the maximal breathing capacity, 1,12 increase in airway resistance, 2,8 mild hyperventilation with hypocapnea, oxygen desaturation of arterial blood, 1,8,10 and a normal or reduced compliance. 2,8,10 The present study was designed to investigate pulmonary function in a group of patients with sarcoidosis of the lung, with particular emphasis on studies of respiratory mechanics and their relationship to other functional changes. Clinical Material Thirty patients were studied (Table 1). Sarcoidosis was confirmed in 26 of them by tissue biopsy and in four by clinical measures (Table 2).
