ResumoThe Forty-Ninth Annual Meeting of The Society of Thoracic Surgeons was held at the Los Angeles Convention Center in Los Angeles, California, January 26–30, 2013. More than 4,600 attended, including surgeons, allied health care professionals, and exhibitors. Attendees of the STS Annual Meeting had the opportunity to participate in a variety of educational sessions, including Parallel Surgical Forums, Early Riser Sessions, Surgical Video Matinees, and STS University. The Monday morning General Session featured three Richard E. Clark Papers, selected for their research utilizing data from the STS National Database. The presentations were as follows: Adult Cardiac Surgery—“Preoperative Beta-Blocker Use Should Not Be Used as a Quality Metric for Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting: A Statewide, Multi-Institutional STS Adult Cardiac Surgery Database Analysis”; General Thoracic Surgery—“Evaluation of the Reliability of Clinical Staging of T2N0 Esophageal Cancer: A Review of the STS General Thoracic Surgery Database”; and Congenital Heart Surgery—“Multi-Institutional Experience With Surgery for Ebstein’s Malformation: An Analysis of the STS Congenital Heart Surgery Database.” In the General Session on Tuesday morning, three J. Maxwell Chamberlain Memorial Papers were presented: Adult Cardiac Surgery—“Composite Analysis of 189,793 Medicare Patients with Multivessel Coronary Disease Demonstrates a Long-Term Advantage for CABG Compared to Stent Placement”; General Thoracic Surgery—“National Cooperative Group Trials of ‘High-Risk’ Patients With Lung Cancer: Are They Truly High Risk?”; and Congenital Heart Surgery—“Effect of Conduit Type and Size on Right Ventricle–Pulmonary Artery Conduit Durability in Infants Less Than 2 Years of Age: A Congenital Heart Surgeons’ Society Study.” Of particular note were four highly motivational presentations: the Presidential Address, Thomas B. Ferguson Lecture, Lillehei Lecture, and Ethics Debate. In his Presidential Address, “The Passions and Actions of Our Lives: Changing the World Around Us,” Jeffrey B. Rich, MD, stressed the importance of quality in health care and discussed the Society’s role in this endeavor. Dr Rich urged his colleagues to lead the way in improving health care quality. The Thomas B. Ferguson Lecture was given by Mark B. McClellan, MD, PhD, Director of the Engelberg Center for Healthcare Reform at The Brookings Institution. Dr McClellan’s talk, “Real Health Care Reform and STS Leadership,” gave an insider’s perspective on managing obstacles to real health care reform with clinical leadership. The C. Walton Lillehei Lecture was presented by Carolyn M. Clancy, MD, Director of the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality. Dr Clancy’s presentation, “Making Science Count: Overcoming the Challenge to Patient-Centered Care,” focused on current trends and challenges in health care quality that are shaping the future direction of service delivery. The Ethics Debate was titled, “Patients Declared Dead for Organ Donation Are Not Really Dead: Should the Dead Donor Rule Be Abandoned?” Two experts in the field gave opposing answers to this dilemma and then engaged with audience members in the debate. In addition to these presentations, the Workforce on Patient Safety offered another important patient safety parallel session, and the Associate Membership Symposium highlighted interprofessional leadership in the operating room and in providing lung cancer treatment. New this year, the Workforce on Annual Meeting offered timely sessions on the Affordable Care Act and clinical trials, the latter including reflections on old trials and plans for new trials. In addition, a new audience polling feature was used in select scientific sessions that allowed audience members to share their opinions on various topics using either the Internet or cell phone texting features. The Annual Meeting also featured collaborative educational efforts with other professional medical organizations, including the American Association for Thoracic Surgery (STS/AATS Tech-Con 2013); the Society of Cardiovascular Anesthesiologists (Intraoperative Echo and Decision Making in Cardiovascular Surgery); the American College of Chest Physicians (Primer on Advanced and Therapeutic Bronchoscopy: Theory and Hands-On Session); the American College of Cardiology (ACC at STS); the Joint Council on Thoracic Surgery Education (Cardiothoracic Surgical Education); and the Society for Vascular Surgery (What CT Surgeons Need to Know About Vascular Disease in 2013). STS University wrapped up the STS 49th Annual Meeting. More than 450 people registered for 12 sessions. This year’s sessions ranged from a hands-on course on mitral valve repair to a course on novel techniques in esophageal and tracheal surgery. STS University provided an opportunity for registrants to learn the latest cardiothoracic surgery techniques through hands-on procedural education taught by world-renowned instructors. Once again, physicians and nonphysicians will have the opportunity to earn Continuing Medical Education (CME) credit, based on STS Annual Meeting content, at home or in the office. The STS 49th Annual Meeting Online includes the majority of sessions from the live conference, including the surgical symposia, general sessions, parallel surgical forums, surgical motion pictures, and ethics debate. This activity will be available for CME credit until January 31, 2014. STS also is pleased to offer an online version of STS/AATS Tech-Con 2013 again this year. All the educational tracks from STS/AATS Tech-Con 2013 were captured and have been approved for CME credit. In addition to the STS 49th Annual Meeting Online and STS/AATS Tech-Con 2013 Online, STS is now offering STS/SCA Online and STS/ACCP Online. Up to 104.5 CME credits are available when all four products are purchased. For more information, please visit www.sts.org/amonline. The success of the STS 49th Annual Meeting was due in large part to the exemplary commitment of the Workforce on Annual Meeting under the leadership of John V. Conte, MD (Workforce Chair), Vinod H. Thourani, MD (STS University Task Force Chair), Erle H. Austin III, MD (Surgical Symposia Task Force Co-Chair), Frank C. Detterbeck, MD (Surgical Symposia Task Force Co-Chair), and Gregory P. Fontana, MD (Tech-Con Task Force Chair). Before the STS 49th Annual Meeting, STS/AATS Tech-Con 2013 welcomed more than 1,000 attendees. The Tech-Con Task Force did an excellent job putting together a program that encompassed new technologies and emerging trends. The cardiac and thoracic tracks covered coronary revascularization, tracheal replacement, next generation TAVR devices, and mitral valve disease. These tracks also included invited lectures, as well as many debates on topics such as “Alternative Access: Is Femoral First Strategy Baseless?” and “Endovascular Therapies for Thoracic Aortic Disease Should Be Reserved for Inoperable and High-Risk Surgical Patients.” New STS officers and directors were elected during the Annual Membership (Business) Meeting on Monday, January 28. The membership posthumously elected Carolyn E. Reed, MD, as President to honor her exceptional service to the Society and the specialty, including 5 years as STS Treasurer. After an acknowledgment of her inability to serve, Douglas E. Wood, MD, was then elected STS President for 2013–2014. Additionally, David A. Fullerton, MD, was elected First Vice President and Mark S. Allen, MD, was elected Second Vice President. In view of Dr Allen’s election, David R. Jones, MD, was elected to fill the remainder of Dr Allen’s term as Director-at-Large. A second International Director position was added to the Board, and Shinichi Takamoto, MD, PhD, was elected to fill it. The following were also elected by the STS voting membership at the Annual Meeting: Secretary Keith S. Naunheim, MD, Treasurer Robert S. D. Higgins, MD, Resident Director Cameron T. Stock, Jr, MD, and Directors-at-Large Emile Bacha, MD, and Joseph E. Bavaria, MD. Complete rosters of the STS Board of Directors, Standing Committees, Council Operating Boards, Workforces, Annual Meeting Task Forces, and The Annals Editorial Board follow this report. The Society extends its appreciation to retiring STS officers, directors, committee members, and workforce members for their dedicated service. The STS membership elected 160 Active Members and 80 International Members this year. During 2012, 85 Candidate Members, 83 Associate Members, and 59 Pre-Candidate Members were also admitted as part of the rolling admissions process. The Society now has more than 6,600 members. The STS would like to thank the many member volunteers and their supportive families for their commitment to the specialty, as well as for the hard work and long hours they put in to develop and implement this highly successful meeting. The STS 50th Annual Meeting will be held January 25–29, 2014, in Orlando, Florida. Douglas E. Wood, Seattle, WA David A. Fullerton, Aurora, CO Mark S. Allen, Rochester, MN Keith S.
