Resumo

Interest in tetrapyrrole biosynthesis, and especially in chlorophyll formation, revived when it was shown (contrary to previous assumptions) that a pathway of 5-aminolaevulinate biosynthesis exists for chlorophyll formation in cells of higher plants and algae which differs from that for haem formation in animal and in some bacterial cells. Here, we discuss this alternative pathway and other recent advances in our understanding of chlorophyll biosynthesis and its regulation.
