ResumoPoikiloderma vasculare atrophicans is often associated with a reticulosis, lymphoma, or connective tissue disorder. A review of the literature indicates that certain cases remain idiopathic, however. Even with modern laboratory tests made recently available, including immunofiuorescence and capillary microscopy, malignant associated change (MAC) in peripheral blood smears and intradermal autologous white cell test, a serious underlying disturbance could not be determined in a 74-year-old man with poikiloderma vasculare atrophicans of 30 years' duration. This condition may be regarded as primarily a skin disease, or otherwise as a prodromal phase of a potentially lethal systemic process that may evolve at a rate slower than the life span of the subject.
