ResumoSome procedures for the determination of the average thickness of the film of stationary phase in dynamically coated glass capillary columns were improved and compared. Good agreement was found between the film thickness calculated by use of the specific retention volume of toluene as measured on a packed column, the known β-ratio of statically coated columns and the weight of the stationary phase that can be rinsed out of the column. The measured film thicknesses were also found to be in accordance with those predicted by the Fairbrother-Stubbs equation. In addition, the influence of the nature of the glass surface on the film of stationary phase is discussed. It is demonstrated that high coating velocities should be avoided when coating smooth surfaces dynamically.
