ResumoThe microwave spectrum of cis 1-chloro-2-fluoroethylene, CHCl=CHF, has been observed in the 15–25 kMc region for both chlorine species. Rotational constants for CHCl35CHF are a = 16,405.9, b = 3,756.05, and c = 3,052.67 Mc. Agreement of these and other data with values predicted from an assumed structure strongly suggests that the structure can be well represented as a composite of the known vinyl chloride and vinyl fluoride structures. Second-order quadrupole coupling theory is used to afford a direct measurement of χab; the nonzero elements of the tensor χ for the Cl35 species have the values χaa = —22.46, χbb = —10.88, and χab = ±56.7 Mc. These values show a 4% deviation of the C–Cl bond from cylindrical symmetry.
