Emblematic art is an art of compromise. The dualistic composition — image/word, body/soul — in which each part must adapt to the other in a problematic hierarchy, is perfectly paralleled by the state of marriage. As an institution, marriage works in much the same way as an emblem in regulating the relation between the sexes. Do they not both treat the question of pairing ? The example of Aneau and Alciat permits us to study the modalities of this « composition ».
