Resumo

Summary. A tetrad‐forming coccus isolated from a ropy cider was characterized and identified with Pediococcus cerevisiae. This organism occurs both as a slime‐forming and non‐slime‐forming strain, the former being of considerable economic importance if it grows in stored cider. Some factors affecting slime formation have been investigated and are herein reported. The question of whether the generic names Pediococcus and Streptococcus should be merged is also discussed.
