Resumo

Kink-bands are tabular fold-zones resulting from the operation of a shear couple and commonly occur as conjugate sets, usually developing late in the structural history of orogenic systems. The geometry of kink-bands has been investigated in an attempt to determine possible mechanisms of deformation. A theoretical analysis of kink-band geometry, resulting from deformation mechanisms involving flexural-slip and producing continuous simple shear, is presented. Consequently both mechanisms are recognised and the following basic kink-band forms are proposed: joint drags, segregation kink-bands, pelitic strain bands and shear kink bands. Finally the significance of foliation in kink-band systems is discussed and possible stress-fields responsible for kink-band inception are outlined.
