Resumo

An experimental method is described for determining the optical transfer function as a function of spatial frequency. The method has a frequency range of 1.79 lines/mm to 730 lines/mm, is self-normalizing, reasonably compact, and usable over a wide wavelength region. The precision and reliability is good to within 0.02. Sample results are given for a Tessar f/2.8, 50 mm photographic lens at various focal settings. The same lens at f/8, f/16 is compared with that of a theoretically diffraction-limited perfect system. It takes approximately one minute to obtain a trace of the transfer function of an optical system for any given focal setting.
