Resumo

Well, here I am again. I last typed an introduction to this series in 1979 when I assumed the role of ‘‘compiler’’ from Bill Culberson. That introduction was for list 101. I annotated and databased until 1991, when I completed list 143. Since then this project has been carried forward by the exceptional and dedicated efforts of my colleague Ted Esslinger. During Ted’s tenure the entire series was transformed for the web from our files by Einar Timdal and his colleagues, so that everyone everywhere can now search 27,000þ references with the click of a mouse and a few keyboard strokes (at http://www.toyen.uio.no/ botanisk/bot-mus/lav/sok_rll.htm). However, the completeness of this series depends on the assistance of all our colleagues who continue to send copies of their research for inclusion. Without your help, Ted and I, who work and teach at smaller universities, would not be able to ‘‘track down’’ the extraordinary diversity of lichen literature published around the world. We owe a special thanks to Bill Buck at The New York Botanical Garden who continues to send copies of lichen articles gleaned from the extensive botanical literature housed at his institution. I am truly pleased to be contributing to this series once more, and with your help it will continue to be a valuable resource to all of us who study these intriguing organisms.
