Resumo

Overcrowding of satellites in geostationary orbit and the need to place more than one satellite in the same window need not be overemphasized. In order to achieve safe colocation, avoiding collision risk, it is necessary to evolve an appropriate coordinated station-keeping strategy. In ISRO we have successfully achieved colocation of INSAT-2 satellites for the last few years. This paper describes various strategies formulated and the results of studies carried out in ISRO Satellite Centre addressing strategy selection for INSAT-2 satellites colocation. Combined eccentricity vector and inclination vector separation method was found to be the best strategy for safe colocation. The strategy has been successfully used to realise colocation operationally for INSAT-2 satellites.
