ResumoFollowing fusion of protoplasts from a chlorophyll deficient mutant of Datura innoxia from which the protoplasts are able to divide, with green wild type protoplasts of the tree Datura species Datura sanguinea and Datura candida, respectively, which can not, green somatic hybrid calli could be selected. Most of the selected somatic hybrid calli of Datura innoxia + Datura sanguinea were able to form shoots but the shoots did not root. Grafts of tetraploid somatic hybrids showed several abnormalities in the greenhouse. They are not able to flower, they form many adventitious shoots, and often show tumorous tissue at the stems producing teratomatas. Only two hexaploid somatic hybrid calli of Datura innoxia + Datura candida were selected which could be regenerated to plants. These hybrid plants are able to flower.
