Resumo

Abstract Gives an overview of ranking of various global universities: British-QS-THES, Shanghai, Taiwan and Russian. Collected statistics of Russian universities (RU) research output and citation score demonstrated clearly why only few of them were included in global ranking. Statistics was downloaded from the Web of Science and the Essential Science Indicators for 1998–2008. Universities’ ranking developed by Russian agency ReitOR was discussed as failure. RU are the strongest in the post-Soviet domain and can attract the most talented students from the New Independent States. Russian science policy in the higher education should encourage university authorities to participate in the global rankings. For this purpose it is necessary to monitor faculty teachers’ research output and citation score, improve and strength webometrics’ activity.
