Resumo

Tortula desertorum Broth., Tortula pseudo-desertorum Froehl. and Tortula saharae Trab. are reported as taxonomic synonyms of Tortula caninervis (Mitt.) Broth. Tortula ferganensis Laz. is given the new combination Tortula handelii var. ferganensis (Laz.) W. Kramer. The most impor- tant character states of Tortula caninervis, Tortula pseudo-handelii Froehl., Tortula handelii and Tortula handelii var. ferganensis are compared. Tortula handelii is reported new to Iran, while pseudo-handelii is new to Iran, Turkey and Uzbek SSR. During work with the genus Tortula (Pottiaceae) in the Highlands of Iran I had some difficulties with taxa possessing bistratose lamina. The following deals with the taxonomy and distribution of Tortula caninervis (Mitt.) Broth., Tortula desertorum Broth., Tortula ferganensis Laz., Tortula handelii Schiffn., Tortula pseudo-deserto- rum Froehl., Tortula pseudo-handelii Froehl. and Tortula saharae Trab. There are no differences between the type specimens of Tortula desertorum and Syntrichia caninervis. Thus Tortula desertorum Broth. is a taxonomic synonym of Tortula caninervis (Mitt.) Broth. (basionym: Syntrichia caninervis Mitt.). Most specimens of caninervis have been classified as desertorum because the original description of Syntrichia caninervis does not state that the lamina is bistratose. Brotherus (1924) also does not mention the bistratose lamina. Tortula pseudo-desertorum Froehl. is also a taxonomic synonym of Tortula cani- nervis (Mitt.) Broth. Froehlich (1964) wrote in the diagnosis for pseudo-desertorum: T. desertorum Broth. simillima differt nervi dorso papillis latis humilibusque subscabro et cellulis 0.006-0.008 mm tantum.... Ist eine desertorum Broth. mit den Rippenriicken- papillen und der zellgrbfie von handelii Schiffn. As for the Rippenriickenpapillen (papillae on the back of the costa) of han- delii, low, verrucous papillae are meant. In desertorum (=T. caninervis) they are low and branched in a star-shaped manner; their height usually increases towards the apex of a leaf. Froehlich probably thought that it was necessary to set up a new species pseudo-desertorum, because the material on hand had only low papillae on the whole costa. Examination of the type specimens reveals that the papillae on the back of the costa of pseudo-desertorum are not unbranched but star-shaped as in desertorum. In handelii the papillae are either unbranched or absent. In desertorum some specimens occur in which the individual leaves of a stem are different with respect
