ResumoThe use of a germfree inoculation technique and washing the specimens greatly reduced the frequency with which diphtheroids were isolated from the synovial membranes of patients with rheumatoid arthritis. Staphylococci were isolated almost as often as diphtheroids. Until better evidence is available diphtheroids isolated from pathological material should be considered as airborne contaminants.
