ResumoAbstract It has been shown that alkylammonium methyl phosphonates [CH3OP(O)HO]− [NCH3R3]+ and sodium ethyl phosphonate [CH3CH2OP(O)HO]− Na+ catalyse the Atherton–Todd reaction. It has been established that the alkylammonium salts themself react with carbon tetrachloride to give chloroform, resulting in the postulate that base activation leads to the monoalkyl phosphonate anion.
