ResumoRecently Kakitani and Mataga claimed that the free energy dependence of electron transfer rates in polar solvents could be explained by taking into account the dielectric saturation effect of polar solvents. It is shown that the basic assumption of their model is incorrect. The correct treatment of the dielectric saturation effect on electron transfer rates is presented. It is concluded that the apparent absence of the so-called inverted region in the free energy dependence of electron transfer rates is not accounted for by the dielectric saturation effect. The correct formalism is given in the Monte Carlo calculation of the configuration coordinate diagram for electron transfer.
