Resumo

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) represents a large burden in terms of global mortality and morbidity [ [1] Rosamond W. Flegal K. Friday G. et al. Heart disease and stroke statistics—2007 update: a report from the American Heart Association Statistics Committee and Stroke Statistics Subcommittee. Circulation. 2007; 115: e69-e171 Crossref PubMed Scopus (2694) Google Scholar ]. Although this is preventable through treatment of traditional risk factors which account for over 90% of coronary heart disease [ [2] Smitha Patrick J. Blumenthal James A. Behavioral aspects of cardiovascular disease: epidemiology, mechanisms, and treatment. Rev Esp Cardiol. 2011; 64: 924-933 Crossref PubMed Scopus (39) Google Scholar ], there exists an array of non-traditional risk factors, for which the link with CVD is less understood. Amongst these tentative non-traditional risk factors for CVD are psycho-social factors and psychiatric disorders [ [3] Everson-Rose S.A. Lewis T.T. Psychosocial factors and cardiovascular diseases. Ann Rev Public Health. 2005; 26: 469-500 Crossref PubMed Scopus (565) Google Scholar ].
