Resumo

This article describes and analyzes how the fathers and mothers of arrested, killed and missing leftist activists during the dictatorship in Brazil acted to denounce the human rights violations carried out by repression agencies. Using the concept of dynamics of gender, it discusses maternal and paternal roles in a specific context by highlighting how these fathers and these mothers reacted after finding out about the imprisonment and/or "disappearance" of their sons and daughters in the period from 1969 to 1974. Three books of memories are used in the construction of this history. They were written by friends and relatives and describe the political career of former leftist activists, besides referring to the topics in question. This article is situated in the field of gender studies.Key words: paternity, maternity, dictatorship, gender relations.
