ResumoFeeding hal>ils and moulh oSleology oI' silverside, Oclol/leslfles fllImel/sis de Buen (Alheriniformes, Alherinopsidae) in lhe Mirim Lagoon, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil.Gutcontenls 01'304 individuais ofthe silverside Oclol1leslfles hl/mel/sis de Buen, 1953 were analyzed using frequency oI' occurrence (FO%) and gravimelric (P%) methods.A lolal 01'207 individuais (68.1 %) had some food itens in the gUl, while 97 individuais (31.9%) had empty guts. The silverside Odollleslhes hllmel1sis has presented a benthic camivorous diet, preying mainly on molluscs and al1hropods.The molluscs Heleobia sp.(FO = 61.35%)and CorbiclIla j/uminea (Müller, 1774) (FO = 57.97%)were the most frequent itens, [ollowed by Neocorbicula limosa (Maton, 1811) (FO = 17.39%).Among the arthropods, the coleoptera insects (FO= 18.84%) were dominant followed by, insect larvae (FO = 6.76%), the crustacean Palaemol1eles argelllilllls Nobili, 1901 (FO = 1.93%) and isopods (FO = 1.45%).Vegetal remains, organic malter and digested fish were grouped due to low frequency (FO = 9.13%) being considered occasionai.Juvenile fed mainly on insect larvae and molluscs, while the adults preferred molluscs and coleoptera.Onlhe description 01' its feeding apparatus the imporlance oI' a prolrusible upper jaw was observed, being important on lhe capture of prey in inaccessible places.A prolrusible mouth and the format ofthe pharingean plates.are imporlant morphological characters lhat assist on lhe capture and handling ofprey. The molariform shaped pharingean teeth help break hard food items, as shells and carapaces.
