This study aims to disclose a new, though quite obvious, aspect - that of the initiation of the leading character - in Machado's short story "Missa do Galo". Since the process takes place in a subtle way, in accordance to the author's usual style, the evidences of initiation must be sought mostly beetween the lines of the text.
