ResumoUsing a double-lumen-tube jejunal-perfusion technique, absorption-rates of folic acid (pteroylglutamic acid) from solutions containing 10, 50, and 250 ng. per ml. were determined in twelve Zambian patients; six of them had a systemic bacterial infection and six had no evidence of an infection. Folic-acid absorption was significantly impaired at all concentrations in the group with systemic bacterial infections. Systemic infections are known to be associated with depletion of folate and sometimes produce megaloblastic anæmia; the present finding suggests that impaired absorption of dietary folate may be an important mechanism in their pathogenesis.
